Brown Stars were developed in the 1950's by crossing a Rhode Island Red male with a silver factor White Rock for efficient brown egg production and ease of sexing. Brown Star chicks have single combs and clean, yellow legs and feet and can be color sexed when hatched. Male chicks are a light yellow, with dark brown chipmunk streaks running down the back; while female chicks are dark red with dark brown chipmunk streaks running down the back. Adult males are primarily white, with some black on their wings and tail; while adult females have red plumage that is slightly lighter than that of Rhode Island Reds, with black tails and wing tips.
